Palmdale, California
Palmdale is a large city in northern Los Angeles County. Palmdale has a rich history.
Palmdale has a history that reflects its development from a small agricultural community to a thriving city. Here’s an overview of the history of Palmdale:
Early Inhabitants: Before European settlement, the Antelope Valley, including the Palmdale area, was inhabited by the Kitanemuk and Serrano Native American tribes. They thrived in the region’s desert environment.
Spanish and Mexican Period: During the Spanish colonial era, the area was explored by Spanish expeditions. However, it was not heavily settled due to the arid desert conditions. It was part of Mexican land grants, including Rancho El Tejon and Rancho San Francisco. Spanish soldier Captain Pedro Fages explored the Antelope Valley in 1772. The opening of California to overland travel through the forbearing desert was due to Captain Juan Bautista de Anza and Father Francisco Garces, a Spanish padre.
American Ownership: After the Mexican-American War and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, California became part of the United States. The landownership patterns changed, and ranchos were gradually sold off to private individuals. “Palmenthal”, the first European settlement within the limits of Palmdale, was established as a village on April 20, 1886, by westward Lutheran travelers from the American Midwest. According to area folklore, the travelers had been told they would know they were close to the ocean when they saw palm trees. They took the local Joshua trees for palms and named their settlement after them. The village was officially established upon the arrival of a post office on June 17, 1888. By 1899, only one family was left in the original village. The rest of the settlers, including the post office, moved closer to the Southern Pacific railroad tracks. This new community was renamed Palmdale.
Agricultural Beginnings: The early history of Palmdale was marked by ranching and farming. Dry farming and livestock were common in the region, with crops such as wheat, barley, and alfalfa being cultivated.
Railroad Arrival: The construction of the Southern Pacific Railroad in the late 19th century connected the Antelope Valley to the rest of California, making transportation of goods and people more accessible.
Incorporation: Palmdale was incorporated as a city on August 24, 1962, becoming one of the first communities in the Antelope Valley to do so. This marked a turning point in its history, as it began to experience rapid growth and development.
Aerospace Industry: The growth of the aerospace industry in Southern California, particularly during the Cold War era, played a significant role in Palmdale’s development. Facilities like Edwards Air Force Base and Palmdale Regional Airport became key centers for aviation and aerospace research and development.
Population Growth: Palmdale experienced substantial population growth in the late 20th century, with many residents commuting to jobs in the Los Angeles area. It became one of the fastest-growing cities in California.
Economic Diversification: While the aerospace industry remains a vital part of Palmdale’s economy, the city has also diversified into other industries, including healthcare, retail, and education.
Cultural Attractions: The Palmdale Amphitheater and the Palmdale Playhouse provide cultural and entertainment options for residents.
Natural Beauty: The city is surrounded by the stunning landscapes of the Mojave Desert and the San Gabriel Mountains, offering outdoor recreational opportunities such as hiking, camping, and off-roading.
Education: Palmdale is served by the Palmdale School District and the Antelope Valley Union High School District, with several public and private schools in the area.
Community Involvement: Palmdale has a strong sense of community engagement, with residents actively participating in local events, organizations, and civic activities.

Featured Employment Case
Johnson v. United Cerebral Palsy/Spastic Children’s Found. of Los Angeles & Ventura Ctys., 173 Cal. App. 4th 740 (2009)
A former employee filed a complaint against her former employer and alleged that she was fired because she was pregnant, in violation of the California Fair Employment and Housing Act. The critican issue in the case was whether “me too” evidence proffered by employee was admissible, and the Court of Appeal agreed that it was. “Me too” evidence presented by a employment discrimination plaintiff alleging that she was fired due to her pregnancy, consisting of summary judgment declarations of other former employees that they had been fired due to their pregnancies, was relevant to issue of whether employer’s proffered reason for termination was pretextual, and thus violated California Fair Employment and Housing Act, and such evidence did not require exclusion on ground that its probative value was substantially outweighed by danger of unfair prejudice; evidence set out factual scenarios that were sufficiently similar to the one presented by plaintiff concerning her own discharge by employer to be admissible, and dissimilarities between facts related in other employees’ declarations and facts asserted by plaintiff went to the weight of the evidence, not its admissibility.
