About Montclair
Montclair is city located in San Bernardino County. Montclair covers five square miles. It is home to roughly 40,000 residents. Montclair lies within zip code 91763. Montclair’s history is steeped in rich heritage. The land once inhabited by the Serrano Indians became the site of a village along a creek named “Arroyo de los Alisos” in 1774. Captain Juan Bautista D’Anza, on a journey to the San Gabriel Mission, marked the stream. Later, in 1897, the area saw its first modern development, known as “The Township of Marquette,” thanks to the efforts of Mrs. Edward Fraser. In the early 1900s, Emil Firth, a land developer, named a 1,000-acre tract “Monte Vista.” This marked the beginning of a growing community. The Monte Vista Land Tract thrived after World War II, leading to concerns about potential annexation by neighboring cities. To safeguard their destiny, residents formed the Monte Vista Improvement Association and voted for city incorporation in 1956. With a population of 8,008 and 4.2 square miles, Montclair officially became a city. The first City Council met in a former butcher shop and began making strides in municipal governance, including zoning ordinances, street lighting, and recreation programs. Montclair established its own Fire Department, housed in two fire stations, and on April 8, 1958, residents voted to change the city’s name to Montclair due to mail service confusion with another Monte Vista in Northern California. The City’s forward-thinking residents secured land for a Civic Center in 1953, and it was dedicated in 1964, housing city offices and the Police Department. In 1968, Montclair Plaza, a large shopping center, opened its doors, boosting the city’s economic stability and tax revenue. Today, it remains a thriving shopping destination. Situated at the crossroads of Los Angeles, Orange County, and the Inland Empire, Montclair continues to grow. The city boasts a young and diverse population, with its own Police and Fire Departments, and is home to several universities and colleges, making it a vibrant part of Southern California.
